History
The foundation of Balıkesir University dates back to the establishment of Karesi Teacher Training School in 1910. With the special interest of the then Minister of National Education, Mustafa Necati Bey, the school was relocated in 1932 to the building that currently houses the Necatibey Faculty of Education and was renamed Necatibey Teacher School. Between 1932 and 1982, the institution continued to train teachers under the name Necatibey Institute of Education. In 1981, its status was upgraded from a three-year program to a four-year “Higher Teacher Education School.” In 1982, it was affiliated with Uludağ University and renamed the Necatibey Faculty of Education.
Similarly, under Statutory Decree No. 41 issued in 1982, other higher education institutions in Balıkesir were also affiliated with Uludağ University: the Balıkesir School of Business and Tourism became the Balıkesir School of Tourism and Hotel Management; the Balıkesir State Academy of Engineering and Architecture became the Balıkesir Faculty of Engineering; and the Balıkesir Vocational School continued to operate under the same name.
These institutions, which remained under the umbrella of Uludağ University for ten years, provided a strong foundation for the establishment of Balıkesir University through steady and sound development. Balıkesir University was officially established under Law No. 3837, published in the Official Gazette dated July 11, 1992 (issue no. 21281), and gained legal entity status as of January 1, 1993.
